Francis lived his early years in the Peace River District of northern British Columbia, hunting, trappings and cutting lumber.
In 1967 Francis and family chose to leave the north country, resettling in the Okanagan. Over the years he as tested his artistic skills, working with wood, rock and painting in oils and acrylics, creating fiddles, jewellery, clocks. After years of working in the lumber industry it seemed only natural that he would choose to work in wood and so in 1987 he carved his first wild bird.
An accomplished artist without formal training, his deep respect for and life long observations of nature have instilled in him an understanding which shines through in his artwork.
His wildlife carvings have become very popular and are sought out by collectors in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. As well as recognition by eager collectors, Francis has proven his stature amongst his peers by winning 1st and 2nd prizes year after year at the Brant Festival.
Francis Houde is still using his life experiences to help him create birds of the wild. If you are lucky enough to acquire one of his carvings, you will truly be in possession of a treasure representing both his talent and love of the wild.
